Overview

Scriptures teach humanity not to kill, does that include animals? Scriptures teach human beings to have mercy and to be generous, are we to extend this to other species? How can we best honor scriptures at the dinner table? What do sacred stories, the prophets, and religious leaders teach us about rightful relations with the many other creatures of God, and how is this directly connected to the welfare of the planet? Animals and Christianity explores core Christian scriptures and ethics to understand our rightful relations with animals with one primary question to answer: How do the everyday choices of contemporary Christians effect animals and how can people of faith better honor core scriptures in their everyday lives?

Book Quotes

“Changing what we put in our mouth is the simplest solution to a host of the world’s most disconcerting problems.”

Animals and Christianity

Jesus exemplified the importance of expanding the reach of our caring. Through his example, Christianity demands that we expand our capacity for love. Love cannot be depleted—there is no need to limit or reserve our caring and Christian ethics do not teach us to save and hoard our love for those closest to us, whether our families, our race, our class, our nation, or our species. We need not fear running out of love when we care for strangers, those in distant lands, or other species—love comes from God, connects us back to God, and is limitless. Perhaps above all else, Christianity requires munificent love.

Animals and Christianity

“Christianity teaches such values and ethics as compassion, simplicity, service, and caretaking life and the planet. A vegan diet protects anymuls, people, and the planet: Choosing vegan aligns with Christian ethics.”

Animals and Christianity

“Because they are exploited for food, farmed anymuls suffer physically and mentally and lead to premature death: In choosing to eat flesh, dairy, or eggs, particularly when these products come from intensified industrialized farms, we perpetuate suffering, and no matter where we get the anymal products that we eat, our purchases buy the slaughter of young adolescents.”
