ANYMAL

[ en-uh-muhl ]

noun

“Anymal,” coined by Dr. Kemmerer, is a contraction of “any” and “animal,” and is pronounced in English as “any” and “mul.” “Anymal” refers to individuals from every species except that of the speaker/author. “Anymal” avoids the use of:

  • “animal” as if human beings were not animals;

  • humanocentric, dualistic, and alienating references such as “non” and “other”; and

  • cumbersome terms such as nonhuman animals and other-than-human animals.
